Interesting thoughts put forth here. The core nugget of truth in here is that, had Joshua Chamberlain not given that order to protect that left flank of the Union Army, we may indeed have not joined WWII with such combined force as that allowed by a United States. In fact, as Shelby Foote said during Ken Burns’ seminal Civil War project, “…the Civil War took us from the United States are, to the United States is.”
