Don’t give up the ship; today in history…

“Don’t Give Up The Ship!” commanded 31-year-old Captain James Lawrence, as he lay wounded on the deck of the U.S.S. Chesapeake.

Captain Lawrence fought Muslim Barbary pirates in 1804, and when the War of 1812 began, he commanded the U.S.S. Hornet which captured the privateer Dolphin and the H.M.S. Peacock.

President Madison wrote May 25, 1813:

“The brilliant achievements of our infant Navy, a signal triumph has been gained by Captain Lawrence…in the Hornet sloop of war…

The contest in which the United States are engaged appeals…to the sacred obligation of transmitting…to future generations that…which is held…by the present from the goodness of Divine Providence.”

On JUNE 1, 1813, Captain Lawrence sailed from Boston and was attacked by the British ship Shannon.

Within an hour, nearly every officer was killed.

Later, Captain Oliver Hazard Perry was inspired to name his flagship on Lake Erie “Lawrence.”

Theodore Roosevelt wrote in Hero Tales from American History, 1895:

“Lawrence, dying with the words on his lips, ‘Don’t give up the ship’ and Perry…with the same words blazoned on his banner…won glory in desperate conflicts and left a reputation hardly dimmed.” via William J Federer’s American Minute.

Healthy Phones?

Your phone may be able to help you live a healthier lifestyle, according to a new study.

Being able to connect with a personal coach, who receives your nutrition and exercise information and can then support and encourage you, could help people to live healthier lifestyles, according to new research.

And participants in the study made healthier choices — including eating more fruits and vegetables, and partaking in fewer sedentary activities — even 20 weeks later, according to the study, published in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine.” Get more here:  How Your Phone Could Help You Lead A Healthier Lifestyle.

I’ve written before about how Endomondo is changing my life by encouraging me to keep up my fitness routine and keeping track of what I do. Since I started using this app to track my walking and cycling, I have lost 10 pounds and a lot of inches…

What if the measure of our value in this lifetime is not…

  • how tidy we kept our car
  • whether our kid’s nose had snot crusted on it
  • how flat our stomach was
  • the number of zeroes in our bank account

But how diligently we practice rapture? Not perfectly, but devotedly studying passion.” via Practice Rapture: Ecstatic Sensual Poetry from Mirabai – The Hot Love Revolution: Monogamy is the hottest place on earth.

Lifehack Book Review: iDisorder

As someone who spends a lot of time on and with their iPhone, I’ve found that the times where I unplug and disconnect tend to be the moments where I’m actually the most connected with the task at hand. I’ve been in situations where i’m out with friends having a drink and they are all typing away on their smartphones, socializing with others that aren’t with them “in real life” rather than actually socializing the old-fashioned way. I’ve seen parents plunk their kids’ in front of the toys provided at coffee shops so they can engage with their phones – instead of with fellow patrons or the children they brought with them. I’ve seen the glow of cellphones on until the last possible moment in a movie theatre, showing that the users are waiting until the last possible moment to “untether” from their devices and escape into the film they’re about to watch.

In other words, I’ve seen iDisorder all over the place.

In his book, “iDisorder: Understanding Our Obsession With Technology and Overcoming Its Hold on Us”, Dr. Larry Rosen not only explores research (both pre-existing and his own), but also tries to give readers the resources to avoid falling prey to this type of behaviour – a type of behaviour that is sweeping the globe.” Get more here: Lifehack Book Review: iDisorder.

Let Go of Perfectionism

“A good plan today is better than a perfect plan tomorrow.” ~Proverb

I’m a “recovering perfectionist.”

I make perfect plans. At times, when I’m really working on my plans, I forget to live my actual life.  Because I’m planning. Perfectly.

I had my first strategic plan when I was 10.

“Be a really, really good girl. Then, when you are 16, borrow the car and say that you are going to Drug Fair to buy hairspray. Instead, drive the 15 minutes to your daddy’s house so that he’ll want you back.”

A year later I had to revise my first strategic plan. My alcoholic father died.

Here was the second plan:

“Now you’re all alone.” (Which wasn’t true, by the way. It just felt that way. Anyway, back to the plan.)  “Now you’re all alone. Be perfect.”

In the first plan, I just had to be “good” to be rescued.  In the second one, there was no rescue.

I needed to be perfect.” Get more here: Let Go of Perfectionism: It’s the Leap That Counts | Tiny Buddha: Wisdom Quotes, Letting Go, Letting Happiness In.
