An atheist was seated next to a little girl on an airplane and he turned to her and said, “Do you want to talk? Flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger.”
The little girl, who had just started to read her book, replied to the total stranger, “What would you want to talk about?”
“Oh, I don’t know,” said the atheist. “How about why there is no God, or no Heaven or Hell, or no life after death?” as he smiled smugly.
“Okay,” she said. “Those could be interesting topics but let me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff – grass. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, but a horse produces clumps. Why do you suppose that is?”
The atheist, visibly surprised by the little girl’s intelligence, thinks about it and says, “Hmmm, I have no idea.” To which the little girl replies, “Do you really feel qualified to discuss God, Heaven and Hell, or life after death, when you don’t know shit?”
And then she went back to reading her book.
Giggle Giggle!

““Do you really feel qualified to discuss God, Heaven and Hell, or life after death, when you don’t know shit?””
Because it’s a non sequitur to imply that not knowing about one subject means you known nothing about another.

True dat. Still, I thought it was cute…

It’s marginally better than ‘atheist gets eaten by a bear’, which is what seems to pass for Christian humor about atheists.

Oh, c’mon. Lighten up! Or, are you just spoiling for a flame war first thing in the morning? :-D

I don’t really know what a flame war is…so no.
I just don’t find jokes where the punchline is ‘this person is murdered’ or “I told this person to shut up’ to be very funny.

Reblogged this on Teacher as Transformer and commented:
This is a great story. Recently, a priest in his sermon said the next time someone says they do not believe in God to pose the following: “Describe this God you do not believe in.” He said once the description is complete it is likely we can say: “That is not the God I believe in either.” I find it difficult to describe God, because God is not within my realm of understanding or explanation. It does not mean God does not exist. It just means I am not very expert in some things.

The Tao says “that which can be named is NOT the eternal name“. I think if we can name it, describe it, it must not be god…

That is absolutely true. Faith goes beyond explanation. Thank you for a great post Todd.

It truly is a sad story, incredibly unrealistic and ridiculous. It really showed all those atheists though, put them directly in their place (sarcasm).

Really? Relax! It was meant to be humorous not put anyone in anyone’s place…

I enjoyed the dialogue in the comments today; this is a quite old story, yet is always enjoyable for me, because proselytizing, no matter what the subject of complaint or devotion, is boring, which I find to be a mortal sin… However, I also deplore the smugness of the little girl’s response, as it mirrors the same in many of those who choose faith over reason. They seem to believe that their faith is somehow morally superior to whatever other people may believe…. Without commenting one way or another as to who may be right, humor is a grand way to stimulate such discussion…
Oh, and for the responder with the objection to jokes of this type…. I AM a scientist, and, it’s called “metaphorical humor”….

I don’t think God intended for us to be able to explain him! Faith is the keyword here!! :)

the truth is – you can’t prove that God exists and you can’t prove that he doesn’t. So what good does it do to talk about it? Neither Christians or atheists know.
