Time for a course correction? Updated 12/13/2012

Here’s another post in an infrequent series that I do to give back to the WordPress.com community

A famous comment usually attributed to Lord Leverhulme goes: “I know that half of my advertising budget is wasted, but I’m not sure which half”. The same is true of your blogging and social media time! How can you tell if you’re on track? Which 50% is working? What can you do if you’re off course? Well, the simplest way may be to check your WordPress.com stats for the past year and see what links people are actually clicking on…

12-12-2012 5-21-44 AM

…then give them more of what they like and less of what they don’t! @jonswanson reminded me that reviewing your mosts popular posts and doing more like them is a good review do to as well!

Another interesting way is to add twitter tool Twylah to your mix. Twylah brings your brand message into focus, extends the life of your tweets, and helps you get discovered beyond Twitter. Twitter you say? I don’t even use that! Well, you might want to start! I use the sharing feature in the WordPress settings to send every WordPress post to Twitter as a way of amplifying my posts. I also use Twitter to share articles that I don’t feel like sharing on the blog. Together — my blog posts and my tweets — create what I call a lifestream and Twylah is the place where I put that lifestream. Twylah automagically organizes my lifestream by topic and gives me a pretty good indication of how the internet views my lifestream. If the topics are way off, it might be time for a course correction! If the topics look like who you want to be known as, then Twylah provides that validation as well…

12-12-2012 5-44-39 AM

Another reason why I love Twylah in closing is that I can host Twylah on my domain so that I can effectively add Twylah to my WordPress.com blog and get Search Engine Optimization [SEO] benefits from my tweets as well. Oh, and did I mention that Twylah is free?

Blogging in the WordPress.com community is fun, but if you actually want to be recognized as an authority in an area and get found when people are looking for you, these two tools may be all you need to amp your internet presence! Oh, and by the way if you’re looking for WordPress.com or ‘thought leadership’ marketing coaching, you can stop by my business site at http://e1evation.com/services/

  1. Fact #5: The person who cares the most will often end up doing a task. If you care more about a task being done, you’re more likely to end up doing it—and don’t expect other people to care as much as you do, just because something is important to you. It’s easy to make this mistake in marriage. You think it’s important to get the basement organized, and you expect your spouse to share the work, but your spouse thinks, “We never use the basement anyway, so why bother?” Just because something’s important to you doesn’t make it important to someone else, and people are less likely to share work they deem unimportant. At least not without a lot of nagging.
  2. Of course, there can be an assortment of reasons why you’re not yet getting whatever it is you want. I’m going to suggest, however, that one of the reasons is that you haven’t done EVERYTHING that can be done. So, instead of feeling helpless and confused, revisit the situation at hand, and ask yourself – Are there projects that have yet to be completed? Are there to-do’s that have been patiently waiting to be crossed off of your list?

5 Things You Should Never, Ever Share On Twitter

Image representing Twitter as depicted in Crun...

Ponder this:

Twitter is a network that praises transparency. If you’re honest about who you are, you can’t go wrong in your tweets, right?

Well, there’s honest as in “I made a mistake and now I’m owning up to it”, but there’s also honest as in “here is all my personal info, do with it what you will”. In your path to honesty and transparency online, here are 5 things you should never, ever share.

  3. If it doesn’t work, if it doesn’t flow, maybe life is trying to tell us something. Life is a gentle teacher. She doesn’t always send neon road signs to guide us. Sometimes, the signs are more subtle. Something not working may be a sign! Let go. If we have become frustrated by repeated efforts that aren’t producing desired results, we may be trying to force ourselves down the wrong path. Sometimes, a different solution is appropriate. Sometimes, a different path opens up. Often, the answer will emerge more clearly in the quietness of letting go than it will in the urgency, frustration, and desperation of pushing harder. Learn to recognize when something isn’t working or isn’t flowing. Step back and wait for clear guidance.

A daily roundup of interesting stuff that didn’t quite make it as a blog post on its own.

  1. A massive wagon train, made up of 1,000 settlers and 1,000 head of cattle, sets off down the Oregon Trail from Independence, Missouri. Known as the “Great Emigration,” the expedition came two years after the first modest party of settlers made the long, overland journey to Oregon. After leaving Independence, the giant wagon train followed the Sante Fe Trail for some 40 miles and then turned northwest to the Platte River, which it followed along its northern route to Fort Laramie, Wyoming. From there, it traveled on to the Rocky Mountains, which it passed through by way of the broad, level South Pass that led to the basin of the Colorado River. The travelers then went southwest to Fort Bridger, northwest across a divide to Fort Hall on the Snake River, and on to Fort Boise, where they gained supplies for the difficult journey over the Blue Mountains and into Oregon. The Great Emigration finally arrived in October, completing the 2,000-mile journey from Independence in five months. In the next year, four more wagon trains made the journey, and in 1845 the number of emigrants who used the Oregon Trail exceeded 3,000. Travel along the trail gradually declined with the advent of the railroads, and the route was finally abandoned in the 1870s.

  2. The current season of Springtime and it varied holidays that have themes of new beginnings, new life, freedom from old bondages and the potential for resurected aspirations provide the external prompts for each of us to self-reflect and re-work our life plans.

  3. I’ve always found it easy to start my day healthy. Greek yogurt and fresh fruit are incredibly satisfying at 8 a.m., punctuated by a carefully crafted cup of black coffee that revs my brain. But by 8 p.m., everything changes. I’m a ravenous satyr, craving the flesh of fatty charred meats and the comforting toasty bite of calorie-laden IPAs. Melted cheese has a particular flare that would nauseate my 8-a.m. self, and the same could be said about anything fried or coated in buffalo sauce.

Here are some of the big takeaways:

  • Use Windows Live Writer or [MarsEdit if you’re a Maccie] to curate good content…
  • Use Zemanta to find related pictures, articles and metadata tags to engage readers…
  • Spend the money to get your own domain and apply it to your site…
  • Use the sharing feature to automatically post your new content to your Facebook profile or page, Twitter, etc.
  • Don’t forget the sharing buttons on every post and page if you want people to disseminate your content…
  • Put Twitter and Facebook widgets in your sidebar if you are using those tools [and you should be!]…

Image representing Twylah as depicted in Crunc...

In previous posts I’ve talked quite a bit about how Twitter has become much more important in my ‘thought leadership’ marketing workflow. I would be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to tell you about two tools; one not so new and one that that just popped up on my radar recently. They are Paper.li and Twylah. I’m sure I saw Paper.li pop up over a year ago — Guy Kawaskaki was the first person I saw using it well. Twylah is a different story — I stumbled across Nilofer Merchant’s Twylah page only about a month ago. Both are great tools, but in the final analysis I think if you’re looking to use your tweets as part of your Search Engine Optimization [SEO] strategy, you’ll decide like I did that Twylah is the tool for you. Here’s a little riff I did for you outlining the reasons why…
