How To Hack Google+ For SEO Value

Screen_Shot_2013-10-21_at_11.56.22_AMThis is a small excerpt from a big post by HubSpot on the value of Google+ for SEO:

The biggest difference between Google+ and every other social network, in terms of SEO value, may be the way that user-created content is treated.

Public posts on Google+ are indexed for search, unlike most tweets, Facebook posts, etc. [Note: Twitter has told Google to not follow most links and Facebook’s privacy settings prevent many posts from being indexed – it’s not simply because Google won’t index content from other platforms]. Sure, your profile on other social networks will probably rank well for name-related searches, but there’s no way to target keywords and long tail phrases with specific social posts.

The impact of indexing Google+ public content goes far beyond your personal posts. It means every time that your content gets shared by someone else, you’re gaining link equity as their posts are indexed.

Quick summary: there are a couple primary SEO benefits of using Google Plus. First, posts get crawled and indexed – and it happens quickly because, among other objectives, Google is trying to use Google+ to enhance real-time search. Secondly, Google Plus is used to optimize search results with rich snippets, including the popular Google Authorship feature that allows the author’s picture and information to appear in search results.

I’m not saying you should abandon any other strategy that is working for you — I’m just encouraging you to revisit Google+ if you have not done so already…

Is it time to search for Storify alternatives?

I have been using Storify for almost 1,000 posts or pages across various accounts. They were acquired by Livefyre and since then, some features have been removed and most recently, I noticed that some of my posts and pages did not display within Chrome. While troubleshooting this issue, a tech support person at Livefyre shared this tidbit with me:

“Over the past few months, WordPress’s API has changed and so has Storify’s. We try our level best to be compatible with all WordPress versions, but there are some especially the latest that might now work very well with our plugin. Some setups might not support embeds, resulting in to an error you seeing currently. I’m afraid there is no workaround for this at the moment, we may even discontinue the feature in the future due to us not being able to support a variety of WordPress versions.”

I love Storify because of the way it has worked in conjunction with WordPress in the past but the Storify plugin has not been updated for almost a year. This combined with the lukewarm response from their tech support forces me to put Storify on the ‘not recommended’ list until the status quo changes…

Hello world!

Welcome to WordPress. This is your first post. Edit or delete it, then start blogging!

I’m doing a major overhaul on this blog…

…so don’t be surprised if things are a little out of sorts until sometime on Monday. I’ll post about the changes and the reasons why as soon as I get this all fixed…

WordPress plugins I use and love…

I break my own rules here. I say only use as many as you need and not a single one more. Inactive plugins should be deleted as the have an impact on your site even though they are inactive. Have any good ones that I missed?

Thinking about Gmail and how to use it better…

I’ve spent a good amount of time recently helping a goddess in distress who needed to rollup over a dozen email accounts into one. The key? Use Gmail. And advanced search. And filters! I came across a great post that talks about using advanced search for deletion and I thought I’d share it here because you can use the same principles not only for deleting, but filtering email….

Also, I came across a great tool on Lifehacker that checks your inbox for subscriptions and gives you the opportunity to either unsubscribe or roll them up to a single email. I’m a strong advocate against getting newsletters in your inbox from a productivity standpoint and unroll.me showed me that I had allowed over 200 of them to sneak into my inbox…

One, and one more thing; I’ve added a Gmail resource page to the site. All the good articles I find will be posted there as well…

Mitch Joel writes:

With each and every passing day, we’re seeing more and more people build networks of trust through the creation of content that adds value and – by doing so – wind up in some pretty spectacular positions. It’s easy to be negative and see these individuals as some kind of exception to the rule or an anomaly, but that is shortsighted. These individuals are doing what most brands (and individuals) don’t have the ability or integrity to do: spend the time to actually build the trust first, instead of looking for that quick, big fix. It also speaks volumes to what the future holds for those eager to become entrepreneurs.
