How To Use Your Memory Properly In The Digital Age

Interesting thoughts on remembering out of Australia:

Two people walk into a seminar: one takes photos, video and an audio recording of the presentation, while the other takes hand-written notes. Which person do you think will better recall the information?

The former can use their digital notes to create something new that builds on the topic, the latter – not so easy.

Yet we still keep reading reports, such as one recently in New Scientist, which suggest that writing notes on paper gives a person a definite advantage in terms of remembering content. That report was based in part on an article in Psychological Science on the advantages written notes have over those typed on laptops.

The argument has been around for many years and is usually based on the idea that handwriting is slow and deliberate which allows the reader a deeper understanding of ideas and information, and therefore a better ability to remember it.

That, so the argument goes, is at odds with digitally recording ideas which typically is a quick, haphazard action that limits understanding and therefore recall.

Similar arguments are made over our ability to remember things that we read from a screen, such as a smartphone, tablet or e-reader, as opposed to a paper-printed form.

My question, though, is should memorising information still be a priority?

Eric Schmidt: Google Will Give Higher Rankings to Content Tied to Verified Profiles

English: Eric E. Schmidt, Chairman and CEO of ...

Regardless of how one feels about it, effective use of Google Plus is the defacto standard for getting found in search:

“Within search results, information tied to verified online profiles will be ranked higher than content without such verification, which will result in most users naturally clicking on the top (verified) results. The true cost of remaining anonymous, then, might be irrelevance.”

When Google introduced authorship markup in 2011, Google did note that they were “looking closely at ways this markup could help us highlight authors and rank search results.”

Now Schmidt has made it explicit: in the future, you can boost your rankings by using Google authorship, and as we’ve reported before, Google+ has been designed to be an identity verification network.

Google semantic search; the next big thing?

If you’re unfamiliar with this term, may I suggest that you read David Amerland’s book Google Semantic Search: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Techniques That Get Your Company More Traffic, Increase Brand Impact, and Amplify Your Online Presence. I think my favorite quote from the book is this one…

Something I cannot stress enough is that the fundamental change in the transition from good old-fashioned Boolean search to semantic search lies in creating transparency in your company or brand data to Google’s search. Rather than “telling” search what you think it needs to get you in front of those looking for your services, show it who you are and what you do. This is a change in mindset that transforms Google from an “adversary” of sorts that had to be managed, coerced, and somehow convinced to rank your website and serve it in search to an ally interested in the same things you are: giving the right answer to those who ask a question through search.

Google Authorship changes have you wondering what to do next?

English: Google Logo officially released on Ma...

Google Authorship changes have me pondering what to do next. I had been attempting to lend authority to our Kestrel Aircraft web content by leveraging my Google+ profile linked by Authorship to my posts at http://kestrel.aero. Friday, Google announced this is no longer an option and for the past 48 hours I have been thinking about what to do next.

First, I’m reading David Amerland‘s book Google Semantic Search: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Techniques That Get Your Company More Traffic, Increase Brand Impact, and Amplify Your Online Presence. It’s not a light read, but it is giving me valuable perspective on this issue and is forcing me to take a look at the bigger picture! I strongly recommend his book and now would be a great time to download and read the Kindle version…

The second thing I’m doing is thoughtfully pursuing microdata formats and learning from Schema.org. Here’s a list of good resources I have found along the way:

Beyond writing: 8 alternative content marketing ideas and how to leverage them

Memeburn writes:

A block of text does not sit well with the average users, and they are likely to lose interest fast if you don’t provide him with a little “eye-candy”. To be honest, I rarely read an article from start to finish. Even if I am interested in it, a boring format will probably make me quit before I even get to the middle. The image above shows how different types of articles are usually read.

So what can you do to maintain the viewer’s interest, and hopefully ensure that content marketing becomes king? There is a common misunderstanding when it comes to content. Most live with under impression that the term only refers to written content, but in reality, it also refers to images, videos, podcasts and other means of online communication.
