The Real History of Columbus Day

Every year, on the second Monday of October, the U.S. celebrates Columbus Day, which commemorates the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas on October 12, 1492. Yet he sailed for the Spanish, landed in the Caribbean, and was kind of a jerk. So, uh, why is this a U.S. holiday again?

Just This, and Nothing More

Tara LeMieux is one of my favorite bloggers. Here’s another reason why:

It’s a quiet morning as the storms are rolling in; a paradigm we face nearly every day. In our quest for perfection, we become locked into a perpetual pause and contract.

The warmth of our bed is inviting, but what of those bills left to be paid? Are we willing to divest ourselves of these rigors of pattern, for just a moment – this moment, here and now, beyond the rest.

How to Change Your Brain With Mindfulness

Mindfulness is having a moment. A trending moment, specifically: the hashtag #mindfulnessinamerica is currently trending on Twitter, thanks to the Mindfulness in America conference going on as these words are being typed. But even before Jewel and Anderson Cooper joined forces, meditation (and specifically mindfulness meditation) had become increasingly popular, thanks to apps such as Headspace and studies touting the lasting effects of mindfulness on the mind and body. But are these apps really as effective as serious meditation training? And do these studies’ findings have any basis in reality? Badass Trucker Nails the Gnarliest Right-Hand Turn You’ve Ever Seen

Those towering wind turbines that are slowly starting to cover countrysides around the world don’t just show up overnight—and they’re definitely not dropped in place by a helicopter. They arrive on trucks in pieces—staggeringly massive pieces—that test the skills of drivers navigating roads not designed to accommodate 200-foot long trailers. Can Christian Pulisic become the first U.S. soccer superstar?

It’s already happening!

In case you haven’t heard of him, here’s some data from the Wikipedia:

Christian Mate Pulisic (Croatian: Kristijan Mate Pulišić [kri:sti:jan mǎːte pu:li:ʃitɕ]; born September 18, 1998) is an American professional soccer player who plays as an attacking midfielder or winger for Borussia Dortmund in the German Bundesliga as well as the United States national team.[5][6] Pulisic is considered by many to be the top American soccer prospect,[7] and is the youngest player to represent the senior national team in a FIFA World Cup qualifier. His rapid rise with the U.S. youth national teams has been mirrored by his rapid rise through the Borussia Dortmund academy, where he played just 15 games before being brought into the first team during the 2015–16 winter break.[8]

In April 2016, he became the youngest foreigner to score a goal in the Bundesliga.[9] Later that month, he became the youngest player ever to score two goals in the Bundesliga.[10] On May 28, 2016, he scored in an international friendly against Bolivia to become the youngest player in the modern era to score a goal for the United States at 17 years 253 days old. On September 2, 2016, he became the youngest American player to score a goal in World Cup qualifying history at 17 years, 349 days.
