What did the Buddhist monk say to the hot-dog vendor? Can you make me one with everything?

I was buckling my seat belt in the little Cessna one day, get­ting ready for flight training, when my instructor Rob turned to me.

“I just take a second when I strap myself in and tell myself I’m becoming one with the plane as I do,” Rob said. “It really helped me in the beginning when I was nervous and felt so separate from the airplane.”

What a great idea, I thought. That day turned into one of my most comfortable flying sessions. It reminded me of a lesson I had learned a while back.

For most of my life, I felt disconnected from things: from myself, from other people, from life. That feeling of separate­ness haunted me. It explains why I tried so desperately to attach myself codependently to people, places, and things.

Over the years, I began to see that my separateness was an illusion. The same energy, the same life force, that runs through all the universe runs through you and me, too.

We’re connected, whether we know it or not.

Nobody has to make you one with everything. You already are.

Let go of your illusion of separateness.

Connect yourself.

God, help me know my oneness with the world. Help me know how connected I really am so I don’t have to connect in ways that don’t work.

It’s Not About Winning; It’s About Taking Part

The Olympics are upon us again, and if there’s one thing most of us have realized about this global event is that it’s more than just an international gathering of athletes or a campaign for medals, but also a celebration of solidarity and humanity.

This quick video that we stumbled upon, however, draws another inspiring lesson from the spirit of the Olympics, shining some good light on the importance of participation. Because it’s not just about winning, or being an athlete, or being a patriot for your country – it’s about taking part.

And if we apply this enthusiasm beyond the event, it reminds us again about the importance of being involved, being supportive and being present; be it for your team, your loved ones, your community and even for yourself.

Okay so the video is a commercial by Samsung… but it also happens to be one of the best public service announcements we’ve seen on the spirit of the Olympics. Plus, did we say it’s got soccer (or football) icon David Beckham and star chef Jamie Oliver in it?

The video clip below is a short three minute excerpt featuring Steven Cornford. Cornford, 18 years old when he served in Iraq, was awarded a Silver Star for Valor. He and other vets suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder are returning to Iraq as part of Operation Proper Exit.  This is a moving clip.  He is still so very young.

What the short clip above does not include is Cornford’s closing remarks (which can be found near the end of the full video at “Operation Proper Exit: A return to the war zone“). It was a poignant reminder of the meaning of Memorial Day.  Here’s the excerpts:
