107421-634.jpg…if I won a blogging trip to Australia? What? A blogging trip? Yes! A few weeks ago, I read a post on Darren Rowse’s ProBlogger blog. He shared…

A year ago I was in Queensland for a conference and, sitting at the airport, I had the crazy idea that we should run a ProBlogger Down Under competition. The idea was simple—we run a competition to bring a group of bloggers to Australia to see the Great Barrier Reef and also do a little blogging training. I tweeted the idea and was inundated by people wanting to enter. I also received tweets from some tourism organisations.

To cut a long story short, today I’m ecstatic to announce a competition to bring ten highly creative bloggers from all corners of the globe to Queensland to become Queensland Blogger Correspondents. Lucky winners will not only experience the destination first hand, they will get to blog about it plus become a guest blogger for Tourism Queensland’s own blog later this year.

Sounds great, I said what do I have to do to win? Darren said…

For your chance to win a spot on this exciting trip we want you to tell us why you would make the ideal Queensland Blogger Correspondent. We will choose ten winners based on how you would cover the experience. How you would get the word out about what you’re doing. What kind of exposure you could bring to the destination. What creative methods you would use to share your story.

The form they gave me doesn’t give me near enough space to tell the story so I thought why not post about it and show by example a little of what I’d actually do?! When I told my wife about the possibility, it was the first time she actually got excited about my blogging – that is until she found out it was not a trip for two!

I’m a guy from a town of 3,500 in rural Wisconsin – I have never been to Australia and as a father of six a trip like this would likely be my only hope! My impressions of Australia – like many Americans of my generation – come from movies like these:

I have been blessed in the past, however, to make 7 international trips to 15 countries – one of them was as a social media correspondent for AGCO covering the 2009 Agritechnica trade show in Hannover, Germany. The Agritechnica content is not available on their site, but while traveling as a social media ‘journalist’, I shot and posted videos like this…

In Hannover, I interviewed company representatives and show attendees using business blogging, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to extend the trade show experience to people around the globe using what became my ‘e1evation workflow’ – a toolkit with a repeatable process of finding and sharing great content to drive traffic. The work our team did won the first NAMA award in the social media category…

The work we did at Agritechnica seems pretty ‘run of the mill’ today, but it was quite ground breaking back then. We mastered the logistics of international social media ‘trip coverage’ and set a new standard. As I did in Hannover, I would use each and every tool in my workflow to ferret out stories and capture and produce great content that would drive interest in the trip. I would also benefit from the opportunity to work directly with Darren Rowse — a person whose blogging has directly and indirectly given me many insights over the course of my blogging career. If you doubt just search this blog…

'e1evation workflow'

I think my ignorance of Australia would actually be an asset in this case – I would use it to fuel my curiosity and share what I learn. As a management consultant, I have lots of experience getting up to speed quickly on a subject matter and I’d take on Australia in the same way I did agriculture for AGCO. Among other things I’d…

  • Study for weeks in advance to get a good background on the places I’d be visiting
  • Take pictures and video at every step along the way that would be posted on a timely basis to Flickr and a YouTube channel [rural Wisconsin blogger from the shores of Lake Michigan goes to Great Barrier reef would be an interesting juxtaposition]
  • Share my thoughts via audio and text for my blog daily [which I know from experience is NOT an easy task!]
  • I’d learn from Darren Rowse in the special sessions to be an even better blogger [and photographer] and put my new skills to immediate use…

The end result would be some great content for Tourism Queensland targeted at Americans like me that would drive traffic and interest for years to come. The skills I would gain would benefit my business and my customers as well. I may not be the first choice for a trip like this, but I think I could be the 10th…

Please comment below for the folks at Tourism Queensland and ProBlogger if you think I’d do a good job of getting them the coverage and content they want! Thanks in advance…

I coach a lot of people on how to use WordPress effectively for ‘thought leadership’ marketing. One of the most important things to include in every post is a relevant picture. Why? HubSpot says:

If you’ve ever read a book with a child, you probably know they find pictures more interesting than words; but are adults really that different? I wouldn’t be surprised (or offended!) if you found yourself gravitating more towards the picture in this post than the copy. But images drive more than just attention — they drive engagement. In fact, just one month after introducing timeline for brands, Simply Measured reports that engagement is up 46% percent per post, and visual content (photos and videos) have seen a 65% increase in engagement.

via Why Marketers Should Invest in Visual Content Creation.

Effectively using images in a blog post is an issue however, that separates blogger sheep from goats. In this screencast I focus on a couple of ways bloggers can easily get images into their posts with an emphasis on my favorite blogging tool, Zemanta for both WordPress.com and hosted WordPress…

We’ve All Got Our Stuff – Some Of Us Just Hide It Better Than Others!

Good ‘stuff’ from Tony Meindl that I wanted to share with you…

Thinking that you are alone in your ‘stuff’ – your struggles, insecurities, hopes, fears and desires – is completely false. You think you’re alone because it’s scary to open yourself up to other people. We’re scared we’ll be judged or rejected or abandoned. Or that we’re freaks or messed up or flawed in some way no one else is. So everyone just puts on a happy face. As a result, the standards we hold ourselves to are often derived from media images that don’t exist in reality.

How many times are we fed a Hollywood fairytale about someone and it feels as if our lives are miserable in comparison? We often ignore the truth of that person’s life, which is sure to have been a series of emotional challenges, setbacks, insecurities, disappointments, heartaches, losses, joys, victories and breakthroughs. Just like all of us.

The media is selling personas. Don’t be fooled. Personas aren’t real. We equate celebrity with perfection. Becoming famous – through whatever means necessary – means we’re guaranteed the byproducts of fame: privileges, material abundance, adoration and happiness. In short, nirvana. But just because we “make it” or become famous or win a million dollars or star in America’s Next Top Fill-in-the-Blank doesn’t mean the “stuff” we have goes away.

One of the profound things about life is that it’s a great social equalizer. At some point, everyone has to face his or her stuff. But many of us get stuck in our stuff… feeling trapped. Alone. Hopeless.

But realizing you’re stuck is insight. Because without awareness, you can’t do anything about it. So the real work is learning how to get unstuck.

So how do we do that?

We keep going. We don’t give up. We stop measuring ourselves against fantasies. We open your hearts. We examine and re-examine the beliefs we hold.  About ourselves. About the things we’ve been taught. And about how we choose to see the world. To face head-on the things we most want to avoid. To know that we’re bigger than the set of circumstances we face or the abusive thoughts we hold about ourselves. To know we’re all worthy of love. To realize that the only way out of something is through, never around. And we’re all going through this thing called life together.

Own Your Life

A valuable message from Melody Beattie

Are you willing to take responsibility for this mat, to own it? That doesn’t mean it isn’t everybody else’s mat, too. If you’re big enough to own the mat as yours, you’re big enough to let it be theirs, too.

— George Leonard

In his book The Way of Aikido, George Leonard wrote about the concept of owning the mat. He was talking about aikido. He was referring to an air of ownership, a certain presence he learned to demonstrate both on the mats while practicing martial arts and in his life.

Many subtle attitudes and past conditioning can affect our sense of ownership of our lives and of the world we live in—guilt, a haunting sense of victimization, laziness, living with repressive, angry, or abusive people may have tamed our sense of ownership of our lives. More efficient time management has been on my mind.  Emails piling up.  Project deadlines slipping.  Stress and tension escalating a wee bit.  I can “be” better.

In a recent post, James Altucher answered a reader’s question on “his secret to time management.”  (See his response below).

I happen to agree with most of his tips (and wonder if post should have been renamed “the Introvert’s Guide to Time Management.”)

A few other tips come to mind that work for me: “Just say no” (to time soaks and matters that aren’t core or priorities).  “Cut the time of your meetings in half.”  “Delegate effectively.”

As Terry Thompson at Leadertank often says: “Join the conversation.” What is your secret(s) to effective time management?” And I’m begging you not to say avoid reading and responding to blogs like this one.” Smile

The President, the Pope, And the Prime Minister…

I recently watched Meryl Streep’s film “The Iron Lady” — wasn’t aware she had one the Oscar for her portrayal of Maggie Thatcher but I can see why she did…

— and I was glad I had this book on my shelf to re-read…

“The President, the Pope, and the Prime Minister” is a sweeping, dramatic account of how three great figures changed the course of history, as told by John O’Sullivan, former editor of “National Review” and the “Times of London”, who knew all three and has conducted exclusive interviews that shed extraordinary new light on these giants of the twentieth century.

via Amazon.com: The President, the Pope, And the Prime Minister: Three Who Changed the World (9781596980167): John O’Sullivan: Books.

I recommend both the book and the movie for an interesting perspective on conservatism and character in the 80’s, and no, that’s not an oxymoron…
