Charles Bradley
Nothing like good blues…
Charles Bradley, 65, was born in Gainesville, Florida. He was raised by his grandmother until the age of eight when, while meeting his mother for the first time, she told him that she wanted him to come live with her in Brooklyn, NY. In 1962, his sister took him to the Apollo Theater to see James Brown perform. Bradley was so inspired by the performance that he began to practice mimicking Brown’s style of singing and stage mannerisms at home. When he was a young teen, Bradley ran away from home and lived on the streets and in subway cars for two years. Later, he enlisted in Job Corps which eventually led him to Maine to work as a chef. One time while working, someone told him he looked like James Brown. Yet when asked if he could sing, he was too afraid to admit it. Eventually he did, however, overcome this fear and performed five or six times with…

10 Things to Know About Anne Frank’s The Diary of a Young Girl
Sixty-six years ago today, the seemingly everyday, innocent thoughts of a teen girl were published. But they weren’t so everyday: they were the thoughts of Anne Frank, a 13-year-old in a unique position to make the world understand what it was like to have to hide your entire existence in exchange for a mere chance at surviving the Nazi regime. Her diary has since sold more than 30 million copies and has been translated into 67 languages. If you haven’t read The Diary of a Young Girl in a while (or even if you have), here are 10 things you should know.
Get the list here: 10 Things to Know About Anne Frank's The Diary of a Young Girl | Mental Floss.
The only video of Anne Frank known to exist:
Anne Frank’s father [the only one of the 7 people hiding with Anne] speaks about the diary:
When I see you and how you are…
Tara Brach shared this quote from Rumi in one of her recent meditations…
I must have been incredibly simple or drunk or insane to sneak into my own house and steal money, to climb over the fence and take my own vegetables. But no more. I’ve gotten free of that ignorant fist that was pinching and twisting my secret self.
The universe and the light of the stars come through me. I am the crescent moon put up over the gate to the festival.

Kodaline
David, get off the internet and get outside!!! Thanks for the music…
Kodaline are a Dublin-based Irish alternative rock quartet. In December 2012, the BBC announced that Kodaline had been nominated for the Sound of 2013 poll – a poll which surveys music critics and industry figures to find the most promising new music talent.
For Kodaline, music isn’t just music. “It’s therapy,” says singer Steve Garrigan. “When we write music, the first thing we think of is, it’s therapy for us. Then we think of how we can use that feeling to touch as many people as possible.”
Music should have a purpose, you know, – says Steve, Our purpose is honesty.
Steve, Mark and drummer Vinny May – all aged 22 and 23 – have been working towards this moment for much of their young lives. Growing up in houses just two minutes away from each other in Swords, Steve and Mark met aged eight, when they were the only boys in the school choir. “We…

Awakening Now
At this moment [which is all I have and all I am] this seems to me to be the most beautiful poem I have ever read:
Why wait for your awakening?
The moment your eyes are open, seize the day.
Would you hold back when the Beloved beckons?
Would you deliver your litany of sins like a child’s collection of sea shells, prized and labeled?
“No, I can’t step across the threshold,” you say, eyes downcast.
“I’m not worthy” I’m afraid, and my motives aren’t pure.
I’m not perfect, and surely I haven’t practiced nearly enough.
My meditation isn’t deep, and my prayers are sometimes insincere.
I still chew my fingernails, and the refrigerator isn’t clean.
“Do you value your reasons for staying small more than the light shining through the open door?
Forgive yourself.
Now is the only time you have to be whole.
Now is the sole moment that exists to live in the light of your true Self. Perfection is not a prerequisite for anything but pain.
Please, oh please, don’t continue to believe in your disbelief.
This is the day of your awakening.
If this poem resonates with you as well, here are two Tara Brach meditations on self-compassion that I’d like to share with you. “All I plead with you is this” she says “make love of yourself perfect”…

Because it’s there…
David Kanigan’s cool Zoë Keating post reminded me of Michael Hedges and his ‘harp guitar’. I was unable to find a good video of Michael playing, but I did find this video of Kaki King playing one of Michael’s songs on the harp guitar. The music starts at 1 minute…
Friday Night: Zoë Keating
Thank you, David. A truly amazing combination of art, heart and technology…
Zoë Keating, 41, is a Canadian-born cellist and composer based in San Francisco, California. She is a one-woman orchestra. She uses a cello and a foot-controlled laptop to record layer upon layer of cello, creating intricate, haunting and compelling music. Keating was classically trained from the age of eight. She obtained a liberal arts degree and then spent her 20’s working in software while moonlighting as a cellist in rock bands. She eventually combined the cello and the computer, developing her signature style of live-layered music while improvising for late night crowds at her Francisco warehouse. She speaks regularly on artist-empowerment, sustainable careers and the concept of artist-as-entrepreneur, has been profiled on NPR’s All Things Considered, named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. For the last two years, Zoë has been slowly touring North America, young child in tow, to support her latest album,Into the Trees, which spent 49 weeks on the Billboard classical charts…

Developing A Talent for Living…

A few weeks ago, I came across the movie ‘Peaceful Warrior‘ via streaming Netflix through one of those ‘list posts’ something like the top 20 inspirational movie speeches of all time. All the standards were there; Braveheart, Rocky, etc. but in the list I also found this clip:
I became interested in Dan Millman‘s story and writing and this morning I found this on FinerMinds:
“Life comes at us in waves of change. We cannot predict or control those waves, but we can become better surfers.” – Dan Millman
How can we as humans develop a talent for living?
In life, we all have moments of perfection. For example, the day you embarked on the sojourn of a lifetime. The moment you realized you found true love. The birth of your child. Or the moment you finally realized your self-worth is more important than anyone else’s opinion of you.
But with these delicious moments comes many more moments in life that are sent to test us. Whether they come in the form of everyday routine, or more significant life events that irrecoverably change us – we must learn how to strengthen our minds, body and soul so we don’t continuously get caught in the undercurrent of these challenging times.
In this wonderful TED Talk, best-selling author Dan Millman (he’s the guy who wrote Way of the Peaceful Warrior) explains how.

You already are who you want to be!
Ponder this thought from Mastin Kipp:
The desire that you have in your soul to become whatever you want to become is real. It’s a part of you that is calling out to be seen, heard, felt and acted on. Whatever you want to become, know this: you ALREADY ARE.
So stop trying to become it. Instead, act as if you already are it and watch how magically life unfolds.
Instead of pining or buying into doubt – start TAKING ACTION as if you already are what you want to become.
In other words – BE WHAT YOU SEEK!
