Any fan of documentaries, particularly those of Ken Burns will recognize the iconic voice of Peter Coyote. As one of those fans, imagine my joy when I discovered that the voice behind many of my favorite historical documentaries such as The Civil War, The American Buffalo, and Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery is not only a great actor and voice artist, but also a Buddhist priest!
Peter Coyote is an accomplished actor, writer, and Zen priest, known for his distinctive voice and a career that spans several decades in film, television, and theater. Born on October 10, 1941, in New York City, he initially pursued a path in the arts, which led him to join the San Francisco Mime Troupe in the 1960s.
Coyote gained recognition in the 1980s with roles in notable films such as “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” “The Right Stuff,” and “Jagged Edge.” His performances often showcase a deep emotional range, making him a versatile presence in Hollywood.
In addition to acting, Coyote has authored several books, exploring themes of spirituality and personal growth. His journey into Zen Buddhism has profoundly shaped his life; he became a Zen priest and incorporates these philosophies into his work and teachings.

With a commitment to environmental activism and social justice, Peter Coyote continues to inspire audiences not only through his artistic endeavors but also through his dedication to creating a more mindful and compassionate world.
