The current state of Canadian–American relations

Canada has memorably been described as someone who owns a nice apartment above a biker bar.

It is an affectionate joke, but it captures something essential about the Canadian–American relationship: Canada is prosperous, orderly and proud of the life it has built—but it lives directly above a much larger, louder neighbor whose activities cannot be ignored.

Most of the time, the arrangement works. The neighbors trade, cooperate and occasionally borrow a cup of sugar. But when the management downstairs changes, the music gets louder and motorcycles start revving at three in the morning, life upstairs can become uncomfortable very quickly.

As of August 30, 2026, the biker bar is rattling the floorboards.
