Demystify the Social Media Expert Myth

Much has been said about social media “experts” ranging from Hallelujah, they exist! to “(they) are the cancer..and must be stopped.

These diverse responses are perfectly understandable in an age where every other person (and her nanny) is an “expert”, “guru”, “pundit” or other. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, companies still rely on these darn “experts” to help navigate the uncharted and often turbulent social media waters.

The key to demystifying the social media “expert” myth and finding the real deal is to take a hard look at what a social media “expert” actually does. Based on their role, the experts can be classified into 3 major categories – “Do”ers, Planners, and Talkers.

Which one are you?

[Lifestyles of the] Lazy and ‘low-bandwidth’ed

Almost every advancement in simplifying my social media toolkit comes from the simple fact that I do most of my news consumption and production with a 1Mb/s connection from a hundred year old farmhome in rural Wisconsin over a cellular modem. I simply have to be effective in order to be productive! My ‘low-bandwith’ lifestyle is actually a blessing in disquise…

Oh, that and I’m lazy so my toolkit is very efficient as well!

United We Stand … on Technology

You may take some whacks at Goldman Sachs but don’t lay a hand on my PCs or Macs! That at least is the message one might take from a perusal of Americans’ judgments about who and what are having positive or negative effects on the way things are going in the country today.

A March Pew Research Center survey found public satisfaction with the state of the nation continuing to decline while anger and frustration with the federal government mounts. Nor are the feds the sole target of public distrust. Numerous other institutions share in its opprobrium. On the scale of positive judgments by American adults, banks and other financial institutions, large corporations, labor unions — even the news media and entertainment industry — all score in the 20s or low 30s.

That institutions of higher education, churches and other religious organizations and that perennial favorite “small business” earn higher ratings is perhaps unsurprising. More striking is that at the top of the popularity list — essentially tied with small business for first place in making a positive difference while outranking even religious institutions — are technology companies.

With Social Media Comes Great Opportunity

“Creating beats consuming”

Auren Hoffman has a great post on consuming vs. producing. He says…

“We are meant to be both creators and consumers. Today, however, most people consume far more then they create. Part of the reason for this is because being both a consumer and a creator at the same time is very difficult, and because goods and services have never been more accessible. But a healthy life is one that balances both creation and consumption.

When you consume you are often appreciating other’s work. You eat, watch movies, visit nice places, read books, and party. You vegetate to the sounds of your favorite musical artist on a wonderful couch while surfing Facebook on your beautifully designed laptop.

Creators do just the opposite: they strive to make something that others (or their future self) will appreciate. Creators toil, try different things, fail, and try again.” Source: Summation: creating beats consuming

Kudos to the Catholic Church…

…for the excellent job they are doing with the ‘Catholics come home‘ campaign — a great combination of traditional and new, online media. Discussing this with my good friend Jim Kelleher of Kelleher Creative in St. Louis, I was pleased to see the church hasn’t lost it’s sense of humor, either.

For those of you who didn’t attend Catholic School, the thing that amuses me is the search box. St. Anthony is the patron saint of “lost things”…

How Social Media is Affecting the Way We Speak and Write

Do you speak “social?” There is a lot of writing out there about the effects of social media on business, marketing, branding and customer services. But what about how social media communications is impacting our written communications, or even our oral communications?

Anyone remember when email was going to destroy letter writing, and even the art of writing altogether? Well, it did destroy letter writing, but did it really destroy the art of writing, or just change it?

Blood in the social media waters

It would appear that Chuck Shumer smells blood in the water and sees a way to boost his flagging political career by shining a spotlight on Facebook…

“Facebook is feeling some political heat for its moves last week, after launching a program that “instantly personalizes” websites for visitors by automatically sharing user data with the site owner.

Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) wrote a letter to chief executive Mark Zuckerberg asking him and the company to revisit their decision on the program and move to an “opt in” default rather than an “opt out” one.

Facebook first mentioned the “instant personalization” program in a privacy policy released for public comment last month. After receiving hundreds of user comments (but not the level of outrage it saw when it unveiled the news feed four years ago), it approved the policy. While the program doesn’t share a user’s entire profile, it has ability to pass on information including a user’s name, their friends’ names, profile pictures, gender, connections, and content shared under the “Everyone” privacy setting. Although the company had planned to unveil the program with a wider number of partners, it ultimately winnowed the number to just three, with Microsoft, Pandora and Yelp.” Source: Sen. Chuck Schumer’s letter to Mark Zuckerberg on Facebook privacy | VentureBeat

While I’m not happy about Facebook’s recent moves but I’m horrified at the thought of eejits like Shumer interfering with the flow of information on the internet!
