It’s no surprise that companies use social media to research job candidates. A recent survey by Microsoft confirms this, showing that 70% of recruiters and hiring managers use social media to review online information about potential hires.
Fortune Magazine, in their article How LinkedIn Will Fire Up Your Career, called social media the future of recruiting.
SocializedHR, a Silicon Valley start-up currently in private beta, is hoping to make that future happen. Their first product is the Social Identity Report. Targeted for use by HR departments, recruiters and hiring managers, it is a “social forensics” tool that automates the process of tracking down public, online information on job candidates.

Advice is a commodity, but usable, not practical, instruction is scarce.
While most law firms, big and small, tend to err on the traditional side, social media has created new opportunities for attorneys to flourish as thought leaders and entrepreneurs.
A recent survey from communications consultancy Greentarget notes that, “While the more traditional marketing channels for law firm credentialing continue to dominate … in-house attorneys now are using new media platforms to deepen their professional networks; to obtain their legal, business, and industry news and information; and to enrich their social and personal lives. Most importantly, they expect that trend to accelerate in the future.”
But social media is still uncharted territory for many lawyers, particularly in big firms, said Rachel Zahorsky, a legal affairs reporter for the ABA Journal. “Varied and outdated ethics rules in regards to online communication, as well as numerous examples of cases put in real jeopardy because of prosecutors and judges posting on Facebook () or jurors twittering mid-trial, only fuel a general tendency in the legal profession to distrust new technologies.”

He is the author of three excellent books (Life After The 30-Second Spot,Join The Conversation and the newly minted, Flip The Funnel). Along with that, he is currently one of the chiefs over at the Social Media Marketing agency,Powered. A long time friend (and one of the main inspirations behind the Six Pixels of Separation Blog and Podcast), we’ve decided to hold monthly conversations, debates and back-and-forths that will dive a little deeper into the Digital Marketing and Social Media landscape. This is our fifth conversation (or, as I like to affectionately call it, Across The Sound 5.20), and it focuses on Personal Branding. Does the term still hold meaning? What’s our world like when everyone is broadcasting their personal brand to the world and what are the implications for Marketers? How do you figure out the signal from the noise? Enjoy the conversation…
Great! Some weekend listening for the riding mower…
I’ve been using this strategy for social media management for a few months now, and have found it to be extremely helpful. It has proven to be effective with all of the companies I’ve used it for. I call it 3-2-1. It’s quick, easy, and can all be set up in advance as to allow more time for other strategies.
The Gospel and social media? Absolutely…

I believe that alignment with the overall marketing strategy of the business is crucial, social media doesn’t stand on its own for many companies. It is very important but the company can’t rest everything on the modern tools of the day. Most businesses today who are looking at or implementing social media are not dumping their existing or proven marketing or communication activities. The successful organizations continue to send postcards, making phone calls and hosting meetings. Their social media activities play a supporting role in many of the activities of the corporation including marketing, corporate communications, customer support and forming strong business networks.
Alignment is critical to the overall success of social media into your business. Does your social media administrator need to understand where they stand in the pecking order?
Social Media is just another spoke in the wheel of your business.
Once again, Google tops our list with a host of tools to get you from nine to five (and beyond). By now, we are all familiar with Google Docs for collaborating on documents; Google Calendar for sharing schedules and setting reminders and tasks; Google Reader for ushering updated content from your favorite sites directly into your inbox; Google Alerts for keeping abreast of key topics as they appear online; and Google News for customized news.
This article from law.com is chocked full of good social media apps, but not that Google and Google Reader top the list…
