The most important skill to master

Leo Babauta

Leo Babauta writes:

If you’re like me, you are constantly learning new skills — gardening, carpentry, pizza-making, languages, sports, and so on. And I think this is a fun and wonderful thing to do.

But what’s the most important skill?

That’s debatable. I think compassion is a huge one, as is mindfulness. I’d go with those two any day of the week.

But if I had to pick just one, it would be this: learning to be happy with yourself.

That seems too simple, to trite! Too mushy and New-Agey! And I’ll grant all of that, but I stand firmly by my pick.

Why? The answer has to do with how this one thing can affect everything else in your life. If you are not happy with yourself, or your body, you become insecure. You think you’re not good enough. You fear being abandoned and alone. You do lots of other things to compensate, and these lead to problems.

So many of the problems people have stem from this one thing — being unhappy with themselves (often in the form of being unhappy with their bodies). Let’s take a look at why, and then look at some ideas of how to master the skill.

Regular Exercisers Earn 9 Percent Higher Pay Than Those Who Don’t

“Finding the time—or the motivation—to go to the gym every day can be tough, so consider this one more reason to hit the treadmill: A new study, published in the June edition of the Journal of Labor Research, points out that workers who exercise regularly earn 9% higher salaries than their colleagues that don’t.

Now, correlation doesn’t equal causation, but that’s just what the study aims to get to the bottom of. The full study is available online, and researchers used a technique called propensity score matching to determine whether the employees who earned more were people who always led healthy lives and were good at their jobs anyway, or people who specifically made a point to exercise more on a regular basis. They in turn discovered that even people who had no history of healthy behavior did better at work and were in turn rewarded by their employers for it when they started working out regularly.

This isn’t the first study to draw a line between exercise and higher performance at work (and, subsequently, better compensation at the office), but it’s one of the first to really say that working out can help you bring home a bigger paycheck. Of course, the model used here is statistical, so individual results definitely vary—but one thing is certain: working out regularly can improve your mood, your self-esteem, and your health, so it’s no surprise it’ll help you at the office too. What do you think? Make sense, or are you withholding judgement pending future research?” via Regular Exercisers Earn 9 Percent Higher Pay Than Those Who Don’t.

Little Bird Dreams

Bill Pevlor writes:

“Only a few hours out of the shell, these newly hatched Tree Swallows are resting comfortably.  The parents build feather-lined nests in the bluebird houses we have around our yard. In just a few days, those little black marks will become feathers. This nest will quickly become crowded because they grow amazingly fast.” via Little Bird Dreams | Pops Digital.

Boundaries

Can I go a single day without quoting Melody Beattie? I don’t think so!

“Sometimes, life and people seem to push and push. Because we are so used to pain, we may tell ourselves it doesn’t hurt. Because we are so used to people controlling and manipulating us, we may tell ourselves there is something wrong with us.

There’s nothing wrong with us. Life is pushing and hurting to get our attention. Sometimes, the pain and pushing are pointing toward a lesson. The lesson may be that we’ve become too controlling. Or maybe were being pushed to own our power to take care of ourselves. The issue is boundaries.

If something or somebody is pushing us to our limits, that’s exactly what’s happening: we’re being pushed to our limits. We can be grateful for the lesson that’s here to help us explore and set our boundaries.

Today, I will give myself permission to set the limits I want and need to set in my life.” via June 8: Boundaries.

TGIF! The World’s Most Awesome Drummer

Rick K and the Allnighters have a secret weapon, and no – it’s not that they don swanky Neil Diamond inspired gold blazers but that they have the World’s Most Awesome Drummer.

The World’s Most Awesome Drummer doesn’t play for a Grammy award-wining band, he’s not on the cover of Rolling Stones and he’s not up on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (well yet anyway) BUT he is the guy who reminds every one of us that we should all put 100% in everything we do, continue living the dream and never stop being who you are.

We all have to share the stage at some point but who’s to say we can’t own the stage? This guy puts the “rock” in rockstar :)

Have a great show this Friday, everyone!” via TGIF! The World’s Most Awesome Drummer | FinerMinds.
