12 Rules to Live By

My Philosophy Bookshelf(top)

Craig Ballantyne writes:

The one thing I admire about people who have strong nutrition beliefs is their dogmatic behavior.

For example, a vegetarian, under no circumstances, will ever eat meat. There is no, “well, everyone else is having a burger, so just this once, I will too.”

That’s not how it works.

Not when a vegetarian has a strong personal philosophy that they never, ever, ever eat meat.

And that strong personal philosophy guides them to guilt-free behavior that is congruent with their goals.

I’ve also taught my fat loss clients to develop their own personal philosophy – essentially a set of rules that dictate decisions, and I’ve also created my own rules that determine how I live my life so that I reduce guilt, stress, and wasted emotional energy.

Now the purpose of this email is not to say that my personal philosophies are wrong or right.

Instead, they are simply here to encourage you to adopt your own rules for the sake of living a better, more productive stress free life. You may have your own rules in your head, but I encourage you to put them in writing. And you can adopt a set of rules for every aspect of your life, from health to financial to family and business.

Frederick the Great of Prussia called these ten days “the most brilliant in the world’s history.”

After winning the Battle of Trenton, Christmas night, George Washington’s small force met General Cornwallis‘ 8,000 man British army.

The night before the battle, Washington left his campfires burning and silently marched his army around the back of the British camp at Princeton, New Jersey.

At daybreak, JANUARY 3, 1777, Washington attacked, capturing three regiments of British troops. Enthusiasm swept America. Yale President Ezra Stiles stated in an Election Address before the Governor and General Assembly of Connecticut:

“In our lowest and most dangerous state, in 1776 and 1777, we sustained ourselves against the British Army of 60.000 troops, commanded by…the ablest generals Britain could procure throughout Europe, with a naval force of 22,000 seamen in above 80 men-of-war.

Who but a Washington, inspired by Heaven, could have conceived the surprise move upon the enemy at Princeton-or that Christmas eve when Washington and his army crossed the Delaware?”

Ezra Stiles continued:

“The United States are under peculiar obligations to become a holy people unto the Lord our God.”

Top 10 Ways to Increase Your Willpower

More Brian Johnson!

Willpower. The thing keeps us from eating the entire box of cookies, encourages us to run that extra mile, gets us to power through a long day, and helps us to persevere when we feel like giving up on something.  According to one of our favorite writers, Philosopher’s Notes author, Brian Johnson, “it’s the queen of all virtues – the greatest predictor of health, happiness, wealth and all other good things. We’re inclined to agree.

Watch this fantastic video to learn how to ten great tips to train your brain to build your willpower (and why you should care!).

Another thoughtful post from Jon Swanson…

Jon Swanson's avatar300 words a day

New Year’s Eve we were watching “Live from Lincoln Center.” Hope was recovering from losing four wisdom teeth that morning. Nancy was reading, I was riding the stationary bike I borrowed from friends a year ago. In short, we were exercising our bodies, our minds, and our patience with pain.

I looked at the television just as the camera showed a closeup of a violin neck. I’m sure the director was wanting to show the hand. I noticed the wood. The body of the violin was nicely varnished. The finish on the neck was completely worn off. And then the shot moved on.

I stayed with the worn neck. I’m guessing that the owner didn’t worry about the appearance of the neck. In fact, the wear was evidence that the owner plays. A lot. Practice and performance. Scales and symphonies.

I thought about a Bible at the memorial service last Saturday. DeVon’s Bible was worn, the…
