When I’m not posting bright, shiny objects on this blog I’m busy with my day job as Manager of digital and social media at Kestrel Aircraft. Next week is the annual celebration of aviation in Oshkosh — you might want to tune into http://themorningcup.net if you love airplanes like I do…
See it Simple
Melody Beattie writes:
“It’s too much,” I said to my instructor. “Jumping out of a plane is too much for my mind to comprehend.”
“Then keep it simple,” he said. “Break it down into parts. You have the ride up, where you practice relaxing, your exit, your free-fall time; then you deploy your parachute. Then you decide if it’s working or if you need to go to plan B. Next set up your landing pattern. When you get near the ground, pull your strings and flare.”
I could handle the steps, but the big picture of jumping out of an airplane was too much to envision. But exiting, falling stable, pulling, and flaring were simple parts that felt manageable. My mind could comprehend these simple tasks.
You may never make a skydive. Or maybe you will. But there’s a lot of things in life that seem like too much if we try to see them all as one big thing. I never thought I could stay sober and drug-free for twenty-seven years. But with God’s help and the help of the program, I believed I could refrain from using drugs and alcohol for twenty-four hours. Then the next day, I got up and believed the same thing again.
There have been times I didn’t think I could start my life over. But I could get up in the morning and do the things I thought best for that day.
Are you facing something now in your life that feels too overwhelming? Then simplify it. Break it down into manageable parts until you can see how simple it is.
God, if I’m complicating a task or making it too big and unmanageable in my mind, help me to simplify what I see.” via September 5: See it Simple.
Rare A-36A to Invade Oshkosh
It’s that time of year again when cool aircraft from around the world invade Northeast Wisconsin. I’m starting to get excited about making my annual pilgrimage to see aircraft like this:
EAA confirmed Monday that the recently restored North American A-36A Invader fighter bomber owned by the Collings Foundation will be at AirVenture 2012, according to Gary Norville of American Aero Services, who did the restoration. It’s one of only three known existing A-36s in the world, and one of only two flying. A static display model is at the United States Air Force Museum in Dayton, while Chino Warbirds Inc. in Houston, Texas, also has a flying example.
The A-36 – also called an Apache – is a derivative of the P-51A Mustang or Mustang I as it was known in RAF service. The Collings Foundation airplane (serial No. 42-83738) rolled off North American’s assembly line in 1943 but never made it overseas. A total of 500 A-36s were built at a cost of $49,000 each before they were replaced by the P-51.
It’s powered by the low-altitude optimized 1,325-hp Allison V-1710-87 V12 engine and has a top speed of 365 mph. Norville claims the airplane is “the most authentic A-36 out there,” from the wing-mounted dive brakes right down to the original scoop and radiator – which needed to be rebuilt after it had been modified by a previous owner to accept a P-51D radiator. It carries the paint scheme of the 86th Fighter-Bomber Group based in Italy, which fought in Operation Torch, and is nicknamed Baby Carmen. “It’s painted just the way it would have been,” Norville said.
The visit comes a year after plans fell through to bring the airplane to Oshkosh last year. The restoration took seven years to complete, Norville said.
“Oshkosh was always our goal,” he added. Plans are to arrive at AirVenture on Sunday or Monday from New Smyrna Beach, Florida, and be on display throughout the week in the Warbirds area. This will be one aircraft you won’t want to miss.” via Rare A-36A to Invade Oshkosh.
LOL! This falls into the category of what I’d like to see… :-)
50 Patriotic Women In Stars And Stripes

Who would have thought that one of the hottest views on YouTube would be a safety video from Delta but that’s exactly what’s happening. Deltalina is all the rage…
“She’s been called “Deltalina,” given her physical resemblance to Angelina Jolie (if Jolie were a red head, better looking and not so weird, that is), but her real name is Katherine Lee. If you fly Delta Air Lines, you’ll soon see a lot of Lee because the airline remade its long running safety video – which had all the pizzazz of a Soviet-era training film – with a new four-and-a-half-minute video narrated by Lee, a strikingly attractive 33-year-old flight attendant with high cheekbones and blue eyes. At one point, Lee playfully wags her finger to let viewers know that smoking is not allowed. The video is a hit on YouTube and on various travel message boards. Over on Flyertalk.com, one poster joked that “I hope they are holding classes for all … FAs (flight attendants) on how to do the finger-wag.”
You can see the video by clicking on Katherine’s image here. If you’d like the “back story,” click here for an audio interview with “Kat” conducted by Joe d’Eon and click here for an article in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.” Source: Brangelina? How about “Deltalina”? – BusinessWeek
See? Social media makes even safety something to talk about…
