Senate votes to turn down volume on TV commercials

Legislation to turn down the volume on those loud TV commercials that send couch potatoes diving for their remote controls looks like it’ll soon become law.

The Senate unanimously passed a bill late Wednesday to require television stations and cable companies to limit the volume of commercials and keep them at the level of the programs they interrupt.

The House has passed similar legislation. Before it can become law, minor differences between the two versions have to be worked out when Congress returns to Washington after the Nov. 2 election.

Ever since television caught on in the 1950s, the Federal Communication Commission has been getting complaints about blaring commercials. But the FCC concluded in 1984 there was no fair way to write regulations controlling the “apparent loudness” of commercials. So it hasn’t been regulating them.

Correcting sound levels is more complicated than using the remote control. The television shows and ads come from a variety of sources, from local businesses to syndicators.

Finally the Senate acted on behalf of the people and did something we all can agree on…

Attitude is contagious – What are people catching from YOU?

Several things on a team are not contagious. Talent. Experience. Willingness to practice. But you can be sure of one thing: Attitude is catching. When someone on the team is teachable and his humility is rewarded by improvement, others are more likely to display similar characteristics. When a leader is upbeat in the face of discouraging circumstances, others admire that quality and want to be like her.… People have a tendency to adopt the attitudes of those they spend time with – to pick up on their mindset, beliefs, and approaches to challenges.

One of my mentors, Fred Smith, once told me there are two kinds of people in any organization: polluters and purifiers.

Polluters are like smokestacks, belching out dirty smoke all the time. They hate clear skies, and no matter how clear the air is, they can find a way to poison it with gloom. When the people around them “breathe” their toxins, they feel sicker and sicker.

Purifiers, on the other hand, make everything around them better. It doesn’t matter what kind of rotten atmosphere they encounter. They take in the toxic words of polluters in the organization just as everyone else does, but they filter the words before passing them on. What goes in may be gloomy and negative, but when it comes back out, it’s fresh and clear.

When you spend time with others, do they walk away feeling better or worse? Do you clear the air, giving them a fresh perspective and positive encouragement? Or do they go away feeling gloomy? Watch how people respond to you, and you’ll know which kind of person you are.

Real winners…

“The real winners in life are the people who look at every situation with an expectation that they can make it work or make it better.”

The Lord is rejoicing over you…

I think we often feel like God is watching over us waiting for us to do something wrong. Why? Because, too often, that is often how we function as earthly parents. But God is watching over us waiting for us to do something right. And He rejoices over the things we do right. Even the small things. Especially the small things.

We quote Zechariah 4:10 a lot. “Don’t despite the day of small beginnings.” But I think we miss the middle of the verse: “For the Lord rejoices to see the word begin.” All they’ve done is measure at this point. They haven’t even broken ground. In a sense, they haven’t really done anything yet, but God is already rejoicing. I honestly believe that God is looking any any and every excuse to rejoice over us. Our Heavenly Father is a proud parent. And I promise you this: He is rejoicing over you!

Good thought for a Sunday morning. Make it a good one!
