American Minute for December 16th; The Boston Tea Party

Bill Federer writes:

The British passed taxes on the American colonies, stifling the economy:

1764 Sugar Act-taxing sugar, coffee, wine;

1765 Stamp Act-taxing newspapers, contracts, letters, playing cards and all printed materials; and the

1767 Townshend Acts-taxing glass, paints, paper.

Beginning in 1768, British troops quartered in American homes.

When citizens gathered in protest, March 5, 1770, British troops fired into crowd, killing five, in what was called “the Boston Massacre.”

Just three years later, in 1773, the British passed yet another tax, the “Tea Act.”

While American merchants paid taxes, British allowed the East India Tea Company to sell a half million pounds of tea in the Colonies with no taxes, giving them a monopoly by underselling American merchants.

The citizens of Boston had enough, and on DECEMBER 16, 1773, led by Samuel Adams, a band of patriots called Sons of Liberty, disguised themselves as Mohawk Indians, left the South Meeting House toward Griffin’s Wharf, boarded the ships Dartmouth, Eleanor and Beaver, and threw 342 chests of tea into the harbor.

This was called the Boston Tea Party.

The men of Marlborough, Massachusetts, declared:

“Death is more eligible than slavery. A free-born people are not required by the religion of Jesus Christ to submit to tyranny, but may make use of such power as God has given them to recover and support their liberties…

We implore the Ruler above the skies that He would bare His arm…and let Israel go.”

How to start a fight; how to stop one

recite-30067--1545286160-8i7sxu

Are things like this funny because we’ve all been stupid enough to say them [or something like them] at some point in time or another?

After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for Social Security.

The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver’s License to verify my age.

I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at

home. I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have

to go home and come back later.

The woman said, ‘Unbutton your shirt’.

So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair.

She said, ‘That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for

me’ and she processed my Social Security application.

When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at

the Social Security office. She said, ‘You should have dropped

your pants. You might have gotten disability too.’

And then the fight started…

My wife was standing nude, looking in the bedroom mirror.

She was not happy with what she saw and said to me,

“I feel horrible; I look old, fat and ugly. I really need you

to pay me a compliment.’

I replied, “Your eyesight’s damn near perfect.”

And then the fight started……..

Groan!!!

I had a great day yesterday despite serving as a timer for 9 hours at a swim meet with over 500 kids. Why? I remembered a few things I had read in the past few weeks:

In the midst of this...
In the midst of this…
...I felt like this.
…I felt like this.

Lindsey Ramage taught me I can stop fights before they start by asking:

“Before you speak, ask yourself: is it kind, is it necessary, is it true, does it improve on the silence?” – Sai Baba

via 5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Say Anything « What I see, what I feel, what I’d like to see….

Shelly Bullard reminded me that I am at the heart of my most dissatisfying relationships and of something that Charles Alcorn told me over 30 years ago: “don’t look without for that which you should find within”…

Brian Johnson taught me that I can get in touch with my purpose in 5 seconds by asking myself “is this the highest version of my Self I can be at this moment?”

Finally, Tony Robbins taught me that I can change my state by changing my physiology; I smiled all day long and I was happy. Any time I found myself feeling tired, bored, pissed that there weren’t more volunteers I smiled and changed my state.

Sound overly simplistic? I thought so too but last night when I asked my wife if I needed to offer her an amends for anything I had done that day she couldn’t come up with a single thing and that makes all the difference in the world…

Still Processing after 24 hours of a Horrible Event

Chris JarrellMy pastor Chris Jarrell wrote this yesterday:

Yesterday, a horrible act of evil occurred.  Myself along with many Americans are saddened, heartbroken and feeling helpless.   Many of us are angry, many of us are shaking our heads in disgust or simply questioning…Why?  How?

With any events that involve the murder of innocent children, my righteous anger wells up?

I try to stay in these places personally, because things like this breaks my heart deeply.  I also believe these break the heart of God.  When his creation, the very ones that He created have fallen so deeply in this sin sick world and because of their sin act out on others.

Sin separates us ALL from God’s perfect will.  Sin destroys and kills!  When we as a society excuse sin as this will only effect me…that is a myth and lie.  Sin harms others.  We see that the issues the person who committed this horrendous act has do with mental, nevertheless, that is not excuse, when we need to leave a life of self-control and I believe every heart and every life can be redeem for a greater purpose.

I will be honest with you I wrestle with the tension why things like this happen.  But here what I do know – “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit” Psalm 34:18.  I also know that can deal with our pain and be confronted with our questions and doubts.  I also know that the Savior of the world, Jesus Christ, not empathizes with us but he truly understands what it is like to live in our sin sick world.

As I began praying yesterday about this tragedy, the Holy Spirit prompted me to go to Psalm 61

1 O God, listen to my cry!

Hear my prayer!

2 From the ends of the earth,

I cry to you for help

when my heart is overwhelmed.

Lead me to the towering rock of safety,

3 for you are my safe refuge,

a fortress where my enemies cannot reach me.

4 Let me live forever in your sanctuary,

safe beneath the shelter of your wings!

Another passage, I started praying through for those who are weak and feel like they have no strength to cope at this time is Isaiah 40:29 – “He gives strength to the weary, And to him who lacks might He increases power.”

I know these passages can’t erase the loss, the pain, and the events of yesterday.  I do know God can give us the strength that we all need.  Even in the most hopeless of times and circumstances, He can restore hope.
