Dunkin’ Donuts Seeks Ultimate Coffee Fan on Facebook

Yesterday was national coffee day and I did not pay appropriate homage to the event. Where would we be — I be — without coffee? I would be a mere mortal! If you’re interested in knowing how Dunkin’ Donuts is using Facebook to connect, follow the ‘via’ link…

Are these Mindsets Holding You Back from Achieving Blogging Success?

This is a question I’m asked a fair bit on panels or in interviews, and it’s one that I suspect the people asking the question would like a technical answer to.

The reality is that the biggest mistakes I see bloggers making are usually things that are going on in their minds, rather than on their blogs.

A blogger’s mindset and attitude is as important more important than which blog platform they choose, their blog’s design, or how many posts they make a day.

There are two very common mindsets that I see in many bloggers (and prebloggers), and which I think hold them back.

The Future of Online Media Is Video [?]

“At Monday’s IAB Mixx conference in New York, Gawker Media Founder Nick Denton took the stage with AllThingsD’s Peter Kafka to discuss the future of the blogging network — and that future is all about images and video. “People don’t really want to read text,” Denton said. “They want videos, they want images, bigger, more lavish.” In other words, consumers are looking for online media products that more closely resemble TV and magazines. Denton cited Gizmodo’s notorious leak of the iPhone 4 as an example, which quadrupled traffic for the blog that week. “There is a huge kind of hunger for that image, for the video we produced,” he said. “The core of that story was the image of the phone.” Text, he contended, is more useful for providing context and explanation for more visual kinds of media, rather than serving as the primary medium itself.” Source: Gawker Founder: The Future of Online Media Is Video

Ummm. Not so fast, Nick — what about metadata? What about search? A picture may be worth a thousand words, but visual search is not a reality yet. Until it is, this ‘vision’ may be a little too far reaching…

This Week in Review: Must-Know Tech News For SMBs

Keeping up with all of the important technology news in a given week is a challenge for anyone, let alone busy professionals and people trying to run businesses.

While there’s not yet a known cure, ReadWriteBiz can help alleviate your information overload by bringing you a rundown of some of the most important tech news and product reviews for small to medium-sized businesses.

In an excellent post published early in the week, Mashable writer Jolie O’Dell discussed how SMBs can take advantage of Facebook Places, and walked us through setting up a Facebook Page, connecting it to a Place, building a community and getting started with advertising on Facebook.

On Tuesday, Google announced that Google Docs will finally support mobile document editing, at least on iPad and Android-powered devices (sorry, iPhone users). Until now, loading up docs.google.com on an iPad or smart phone would bring up one’s documents in a read-only format, and any editing had to be done through a third-party app. The change was welcome, especially to users of the iPad, whose large screen isn’t as limiting as that of a phone.

Facebook Now Worth More Than Dell, eBay, Yahoo or Starbucks… on Paper

Did you know that Facebook is worth more than Research in Motion, Starbucks, Dell, Yahoo, Adobe, Intuit or eBay? That’s according to a wide variety of investments and valuations that have shot Facebook’s stock into the stratosphere.

Although Facebook is a private company, investors have been buying and selling shares of the Silicon Valley darling in private transactions and through services such as SecondMarket and SharesPost for some time now.

Facebook’s (Facebook) actual value depends on who you ask, though. Forbes thinks it’s worth $23 billion. SharesPost pins its value at $26.3 billion. And finally, The Financial Times says it’s a $33 billion company.

These valuations are based on real-world trades and transactions. Still, you can’t help but be bewildered by Facebook’s soaring worth. In February 2009, Facebook valued itself at $3.7 billion. By November 2009, it tripled to $9.5 billion. And since then, it’s more than tripled again in value, if you rely on these private transactions for Facebook’s valuation.

Why is a good question? You can follow the ‘via’ link above to go to the source and read the rest of the article if you’re interested in learning more…

Blogging is NOT for Everyone!

Let’s be honest… BLOGGING IS NOT FOR EVERYONE.

Blogging works for me, and I enjoy it, but I can’t say the same for some other proven lead-generating activities often used by real estate agents:

  • Cold calling (I just don’t do it)
  • Farming (I’m not consistent or patient enough)
  • Print advertising (I’m too cheap to do much of that)
  • Open House (I haven’t figured out the magic formula for generating traffic)
  • Buying leads (my response time and follow-up aren’t what they should be)

There are plenty of agents out there who swear by one or more of these, but don’t blog.  That’s okay.  We’re not all alike, and we don’t have the same talents and interests.  That’s okay.  The world would be a very boring place if everyone liked the same thing, wouldn’t it?

Does the internet make you happy?

Apparently so say the Brits…

“There are those who believe that too much time spent on the Internet makes people less social and causes them to lose touch with the real world, but a new British study released today found that access to the Internet and the web, and especially to social networks such as Facebook, can improve people’s levels of happiness. The study found that Internet access improves the overall well-being of lower-income users, those with less education and women — particularly those in developing countries — by giving them a sense of freedom and control over their lives. The report, which was prepared for the former British Computer Society — now known as BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, with 70,000 members in over 120 countries — found what it calls a “statistically significant, positive impact on life satisfaction” as a result of having access to the Internet. Elizabeth Sparrow, president of BCS, said in a statement released along with the study that: Too often conventional wisdom assumes IT has a negative impact on life satisfaction, but the research has found the opposite to be true. IT has a direct positive impact on life satisfaction, even when controlling for income and other factors known to be important in determining well-being. The study, which was based in part on original research as well as on analysis of earlier studies on well-being and information technology, found that women, those with lower incomes and those with lower educational qualifications benefit the most from access to the Internet. “Much of the improvement in life satisfaction that arises from information technology flows to those on lower incomes or with fewer educational qualifications – what we might call the ‘disempowered’ groups in society,” the BCS report says.” Source: Yes, It’s True: The Internet Makes You Happier: Tech News «
