Hearts Set Free…

Psychologist and writer Barb Markway shares this this ‘Independence Day’:

The Self-Compassion Bill of Rights

Today, this fourth day of July, year two thousand and twelve, I, Barbara Ellen Gerth Markway, do solemnly declare these inalienable truths and freedoms for myself, and for my Self-Compassion Project friends. Continue reading “Hearts Set Free…”

John Adams on celebrating the 2nd of July

“The Second Day of July 1776 will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires, and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.” – John Adams to Abigail Adams, July 3, 1776. 1776 filled the calendar with dates deserving of remembrance and even celebration. John Adams, delegate from Massachusetts to the Second Continental Congress, wrote home to his wife Abigail that future generations would celebrate July 2, the date the Congress voted to approve Richard Henry Lee’s resolution declaring independence from Britain for 13 of the British colonies in America. Two days later, that same Congress approved the wording of the document Thomas Jefferson had drafted to announce Lee’s resolution to the world. Today, we celebrate the date of the document Jefferson wrote, and Richard Henry Lee is often a reduced to a footnote, if not erased from history altogether. Who can predict the future? (You know, of course, that Adams and Jefferson both died 50 years to the day after the Declaration of Independence, on July 4, 1826. In the 50 intervening years, Adams and Jefferson were comrades in arms and diplomacy in Europe, officers of the new government in America, opposing candidates for the presidency, President and Vice President, ex-President and President, bitter enemies, then long-distance friends writing almost daily about how to make a great new nation. Read David McCullough’s version of the story, if you can find it.)”

Relationship Wisdom: How to Embrace the Now and Let Go of Past Issues

FinerMinds shares:

Staying in the the present moment and not allowing your past issues with certain individuals to affect your present interactions with them can be challenging.

Whether it be with relatives, romantic partners, friends, or colleagues – the dynamics of human relationships inevitably involve challenging moments and emotional upset from time to time. These incidents can add up; often morphing into harmful patterns of communicating and relating to one another.

In this 7-minute video, the legendary Eckhart Tolle explains how you can break these negative cycles by anchoring yourself in the now. In seeking to be very present, without expectation, you create a new environment that makes it very hard for old, harmful behaviors to continue and, in fact, can cause these negative patterns to crumble away.

Deepening The Wonder

Death is a favor to us, But our scales have lost their balance. The impermanence of the body Should give us great clarity, Deepening the wonder in our senses and eyes Of this mysterious existence we share And are surely just traveling through. Continue reading “Deepening The Wonder”

The Best Examples Of People Caught Cheating On Facebook

Have you seen the website dogshaming? For some reason, it’s wildly popular. People assuage their feelings of anger against their dogs by posting pictures of them along with the ‘crime’ they have committed. Here are a few examples:

Made me wonder why some enterprising gal hasn’t launched a site called ‘manshaming’ but for right now, this will have to do:

According to the super-reliable Internet news source known as Reddit, this guy was just spotted in the Arundle Hills Mall in Maryland. That same journalistic authority (we’ll stop blindly trusting Reddit when CNN does) says that pad of paper in his left hand (screen right, geniuses) is for collecting 500 signatures to get his girlfriend to take him back. Sources (nope, the same source) also claim that a.) the girlfriend was standing in the corner in a green camouflage jacket glaring at him and b.) he started getting very friendly with a “raven-haired beauty” who suggested he shouldn’t have to submit himself to this humiliation.

Cheating is really stupid. Cheating in the Age of Facebook is really, really stupid. Cheating on your significant other when they know your Facebook password is really, really, really, really stupid. Everyone in this list did the first two stupid things, but it’s really amazing how many people put in the extra lack of effort needed to go full stupid. Hopefully you’ll read this and feel good about what a decent person you are for not being a horrible person, or maybe you’ll think of something creative to do to someone who’s wronged you. Alternatively, you might get really freaked out and decide that now’s a good time to break it off with that loser on the side and delete all your texts, calls, emails, and Facebook messages. That would be a good idea.

Can a Website Have Too Much SEO?

…and what the hell is ‘over-optimization’?

Personally, I think Matt Cutts and the Google Webspam team have waaaay too much power [which means you’ll probably never see this post!]. Watch any videos of him speaking about how the Google Webspam team treats specific technical issues and I think you’ll see what I mean. Struggling with the issue of how to adjust client sites for the latest release of updates to the Google search engine, I came across this:

Google’s Matt Cutts announced that Google is working on a search ranking penalty for sites that are “over-optimized” or “overly SEO’ed.”

Matt announced this during a panel Search Engine Land’s Editor-In-Chief, Danny Sullivan and Microsoft’s Senior Product Marketing Manager of Bing at SXSW named Dear Google & Bing: Help Me Rank Better!. The audio for the session has been published where I learned that Google has been working on a new penalty that targets site’s that overly optimize for search engines for the past few months.

Matt Cutts said the new over optimization penalty will be introduced into the search results in the upcoming month or next few weeks. The purpose is to “level the playing field,” Cutts said. To give sites that have great content a better shot at ranking above sites that have content that is not as great but do a better job with SEO.

Here’s a video clip of Matt discussing the issue…

And, if you really want a scare do a search on the phrase “Google penalizes” and you’ll see that Matt and his team have mafia-like powers to ‘disappear’ people and websites!

Now, here’s my issue. Can anyone define for me exactly what constitutes ‘over-optimized’ – even Cutts skirts the issue because defining the term would be to reveal too much about the Google search algorithm would be my guess. The question I have is this, then: if most sites are ‘under-optimized’ then are sites that follow best practices ‘over-optimized’?

Take for example a website that uses a tool like RebelMouse or Twylah to capture their tweets and other social media shares as Search Engine Optimization [SEO] by adding those tools as a cname extension, or one that adds a blog to a static website using tumblr or WordPress using the same approach – are these sites ‘over-optimized’ because the webmaster is clever?

See what I mean? Search Engine Optimization [SEO] is a moving target and Google-style ‘leveling the field’ means content creators are shooting at a moving target in the dark. What do you think?
