Kitten Therapy: The Prescription for Stress

If you let go a little you will have a little happiness. If you let go a lot you will have a lot of happiness. If you let go completely you will be free.

How to Defuse an Argument

I no longer have patience for certain things…

I No Longer Have Patience for Certain Things

I no longer have patience for certain things, not because I’ve become arrogant, but simply because I reached a point in my life where I do not want to waste more time with what displeases me or hurts me. I have no patience for cynicism, excessive criticism and demands of any nature. I lost the will to please those who do not like me, to love those who do not love me and to smile at those who do not want to smile at me. I no longer spend a single minute on those who lie or want to manipulate. I decided not to coexist anymore with pretense, hypocrisy, dishonesty and cheap praise. I do not tolerate selective erudition nor academic arrogance. I do not adjust either to popular gossiping. I hate conflict and comparisons. I believe in a world of opposites and that’s why I avoid people with rigid and inflexible personalities. In friendship I dislike the lack of loyalty and betrayal. I do not get along with those who do not know how to give a compliment or a word of encouragement. Exaggerations bore me and I have difficulty accepting those who do not like animals. And on top of everything I have no patience for anyone who does not deserve my patience. – Meryl Streep

The 10 Non-Commandments

What if, instead of climbing Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments from God, Moses had turned to the Israelites and asked: Hey, what do you guys think we should do? A recent article from CNN explores an ‘atheist’ 10 commandments.

Here are the “Ten Non-Commandments” chosen as the winners:
1. Be open-minded and be willing to alter your beliefs with new evidence.
2. Strive to understand what is most likely to be true, not to believe what you wish to be true.
3. The scientific method is the most reliable way of understanding the natural world.
4. Every person has the right to control of their body.
5. God is not necessary to be a good person or to live a full and meaningful life.
6. Be mindful of the consequences of all your actions and recognize that you must take responsibility for them.
7. Treat others as you would want them to treat you, and can reasonably expect them to want to be treated. Think about their perspective.
8. We have the responsibility to consider others, including future generations.
9. There is no one right way to live.
10. Leave the world a better place than you found it.

More than our difficulties

Another thought that resonates with me from Thich Nhat Hanh…

Thich Nhat Hanh continues to be in hospital where the doctors are encouraged by his small signs of progress. The next update on his health will be posted in the New Year

The seed of suffering in you may be strong, but don’t wait until you have no more suffering before allowing yourself to be happy.

Suffering is not enough. Life is both dreadful and wonderful…

How can I smile when I am filled with so much sorrow?

It is natural – you need to smile to your sorrow because you are more than your sorrow.

Another beautiful observation from my friend David Kanigan…

beach-walk

They were walking up the shoreline, Brother and Sister now in their early 20’s. The waves were lapping at their feet, their feet disappearing in sea foam before the waves rolled back into the ocean.

I’m wading through Herzog’s book, now 60% of the way through. My headphones are piping in a Nils Frahm playlist from his album “Felt“. I set the book down to watch them.

Rachel is doing a handstand on the beach while Eric is taking photos. I can see them laughing as she tries it again. They are Friends. All those years of fighting, squabbling and picking on each other in the back seat of the car…All those corrections by Mom and Dad to keep it civil…look at them, they’ve become Friends.

Just as they pass below me, as if on cue, the late afternoon sun streams through the clouds. A warm breeze…

Can Feedly improve your state of mind?

Most of the content I share here comes from a tool called Feedly. I posted some thoughts about it on my business blog…

Todd Lohenry's avatarTodd's Blog

I believe so. Psychologist Alice Boyes recently shared this thought on Psychology Today:

No one needs a research study to know that mainstream news generally consists of reporting negative events. For example, the nightly news or morning paper will tell you about a train that derailed but not the thousands of trains that didn’t.

Especially if you’re prone to anxiety, watching or reading mainstream news can be fear and anxiety inducing. Why does this matter? When the world seems dangerous, people are less likely to get out there and live their lives in interesting ways.

What’s an alternative?  The alternative is to find media and other sources of information that are inspiring and give you a sense of general safety, optimism and abundant opportunity.

Here’s some ways to improve your information diet…

Not only can Feedly make you more smarter and more productive, if you use it to ‘accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative’ it can also help improve your state of mind!

Sunday Quote: Not taking things too seriously

Easy to be heavy…

Karl Duffy's avatarMindfulbalance

Solemnity flows out of men naturally; but laughter is a leap.

It is easy to be heavy: hard to be light.

Angels can fly because they can take themselves lightly.
