The False Prophet of Common Sense

“If you care about understanding something, then you need to study it, either learning from others’ experience or collecting the data yourself that would allow you to test the causal claim of your common sense theory. In the absence of data, we are all free to speculate, but it is worth reminding yourself that your speculation is exactly that; a flimsy common-sense story that is vulnerable to being blown over by a gust of actual evidence. The common-sense stories we tell to make sense of the world may be compelling, but they are not evidence.

This understanding is essential to taking our own common sense with the grain of salt that it deserves. What seems like common sense to us is, to a great extent, driven by intuition. And, as authors like Daniel Kahneman, Max Bazerman, Dan Ariely, Richard Thaler, and Cass Sunstein have written about so articulately, intuitive judgment is beset by biases. It is possible to train your intuition to improve its fidelity, but that requires substantial training, practice, and feedback. It is rare that life provides us with sufficient training, practice, and feedback. Without them, it is dangerous to place too much confidence in your common-sense intuitions.”

You are my Spring blessing

What a sweet poem!

(Steve  Hanks painting)

You are my Spring blessing

Loveliest girl in my world,

she drank her morning coffee and

her tan bare feet moving with the morning song

of the birds and the nearby sea.

The sea lions were singly loudly and

she told me.

I love the Monterey sounds , the strong coffee and

the poet’s song.

Please whisper me a poem to make me smile.

“Something wicked, something sweet.

You are.

You are my whiskey kisses at midnight,

you are my six am friend,

who walk the long Monterey sea shore with me.

I love you content, I love you restless.

You are my sea-side blessing,

a poet’s last wish.

I shall love you,

till I can’t love no-more.”

The prettiest girl near the dancing Pacific,

she smiled and she brought me near.

She wrapped her arms around me and

I laid in her lap.

She told me.

Opening the Curtain on Act III

My beloved boo has a new blog post after 16 months and it’s well worth the read…

I walked away from a well-paying job on Valentine’s Day without a definitive plan of what was next to come. I just knew it was time, and I’ve stopped trying to unknow what I know. When asked why I was leaving, two reasons were provided. 1) It was time to follow my heart and 2) The people I had strived to serve for the past 11 years would always hold a place in my heart; there was no more appropriate day to depart.

At a meeting with my financial planner last year, it was suggested I was on track to (somewhat) comfortably retire in 5 years. That would have been on or after my birthday in 2023. What does it mean to comfortably retire? Generally, it means having worked, invested and accumulated financial resources substantial enough to do whatever one’s heart desires for the remainder of days.
